Grass and Flowers
Paint where grass and flowers grow, choose their style, and control density independently.

Create the Foliage layer
Open New Layer in the Editor and create the BeamNG.drive Foliage raster. Select the layer, open Collections → Foliage, choose the default collection and select Apply.
Choose Long green grass, Yellow flowers or White flowers. Use Paint (6) to paint the selected style’s value. Value 0 leaves an area empty. You can have one Foliage layer per project.
Protect roads and bare ground
Apply Paint Lock to the Foliage layer and choose the vector layers that should stay protected. Include roads, water, buildings and yards where appropriate. Buffer line features so their protected width covers the intended area.
Review the mask before painting or filling. Use Fill Raster to populate allowed areas, then paint local corrections. Constructed ground roads and exported water and scenery footprints also clear foliage during export; check shoulders and small gaps yourself.
Adjust density
Create a Foliage Density raster to change the amount of cover without replacing the chosen style. It starts at 128. A project without this layer uses medium density.
- 0: bare ground. The chosen foliage style is retained, so raising density brings it back.
- 1–79: sparse cover.
- 80–191: medium cover.
- 192–255: dense cover.
Inspect the result
Select the Foliage layer and Paint (6). In Paint settings, choose Texture under Color map to see grass and flowers as a repeating ground patch. Texture quality changes its sharpness. This flat preview helps inspect the painted area; use Dense Meshes to see upright plants.
Enable Dense Meshes (N) and move the camera close to the ground. Hide the raster overlays using the layer visibility controls to see the plants clearly. Check roadsides, riverbanks and building edges.
The preview shows style and coverage. BeamNG.drive places individual blades around the camera, so their exact positions and visible amount can differ. The game’s graphics settings also affect visible ground cover. Bushes are placed separately through the Trees collection.
Correct unwanted cover
Paint Foliage Density to 0 for a bare patch, or paint Foliage to 0 to remove its style. Use History to undo unwanted painting or fills.
If export reports too many ground-and-foliage combinations, reduce the number of styles or density levels used across different ground textures, then export again. Grass and flowers are limited to the playable terrain; they are not added to the distant background.
